Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te vowed on Thursday to "resist annexation" as China applies growing political and military pressure on the island it considers part of its territory, AFP reported.

"I will also uphold the commitment to resist annexation or encroachment upon our sovereignty," Lai stressed in a speech during National Day celebrations.

On Saturday, Lai stated that it is "impossible" for the People's Republic of China to claim to be the island's motherland, citing Taiwan's older political roots.
