Taiwan's defense ministry said Monday its outlying islands are on "heightened alert," after China launched its "Joint Sword-2024B" military drills.

"All outlying island defense zones are on heightened alert, and our aircraft and ships will respond to enemy situations in accordance with the engagement rules issued by the ministry," it said, according to AFP.

The Chinese military's Eastern Theatre Command stated that the drills serve as a warning to the "separatist acts of Taiwan independence forces."
