Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (pictured) filed a lawsuit against General Motors for "misleading business practices" and illegally collecting private information, the attorney general's office said in a press release.
"Our investigation revealed that General Motors has engaged in egregious business practices that violated Texans' privacy and broke the law. We will hold them accountable," Paxton said. The attorney general further stated the company installed devices in most 2015 model year or newer vehicles to collect and record "highly detailed" data which was then sold to other companies.
The collection and sale of personal data was conducted without customer consent, despite what the attorney general described as General Motors' "lengthy and convoluted disclosures." Paxton said the investigation is a part of the effort to protect Texans' privacy rights.
