The Austrian People's Party (OVP), the Social Democratic Party (SPO) and Neos announced on Thursday that they have agreed to form a governing coalition following legislative elections in September 2024. The agreement means that the right-wing populist Freedom Party of Austria (FPO), which won the most votes in the ballot, will be left out of the government.

OVP leader and Austria's likely next prime minister Christian Stocker (pictured) described the coalition negotiations as "perhaps the most difficult in the history of our country." The deal still needs to be approved by a general meeting of the Neos members on Sunday.
