Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau defended his country's decision to transfer repaired Russian Nord Stream 1 gas turbines back to Germany, despite Kiev's objections.
Speaking to reporters, the prime minister called the move "difficult," but "right." "Russia will not succeed in either weaponizing its energy or dividing our allies amongst ourselves. We are focused on being there to support Ukraine," he noted, adding that not exempting the turbines from sanctions would have harmed Germany.
On Sunday, Canada circumvented its own sanctions against Russia by sending Germany six Siemens Energy turbines, which were in Montreal for repairs. The Ukrainian government later criticized the move, warning it sets a dangerous precedent that encourages Moscow to use its energy as a weapon.
