The Trump administration is considering raising the tax rates on the wealthiest Americans to fulfill United States President Donald Trump's campaign promise of reducing the taxes on tips, Axios reported on Friday, citing a senior White House official.

According to the report, some White House officials believe that increasing the taxes on the rich would make it easier for the administration to deal with other priorities and avoid the Democrats' criticisms of the GOP enlarging the deficit to fund tax cuts for the wealthy. The report noted that the discussions are preliminary and nothing has been decided yet.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was previously reported to hold weekly talks at the White House with Republican congressional leaders about ways to advance Trump's tax agenda.
