Trump asks SCOTUS to rule on federal layoffs

The Trump administration submitted an emergency appeal to the United States Supreme Court on Monday asking it to halt a federal judge's ruling requiring the government to rehire some federal workers. On March 13, District Judge William Alsup issued a temporary order for the administration to rehire around 16,000 employees who were fired while on their probationary period as further litigation continues on the legality of the layoffs.

In the appeal, the administration argued that the order was unlawful because it allowed "third parties hijack the employment relationship between the federal government and its workforce," referring to the fact that the case was filed by unions and other organizations and not by the workers, although probationary federal employees have limited labor rights.
