US President Donald Trump sent a letter to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in March, setting a two-month deadline to reach a new nuclear agreement, Axios reported Wednesday, citing a US official and two sources briefed on the matter.
It remains unclear whether the deadline begins from the letter’s delivery or the start of negotiations. However, if Tehran refuses to engage, the likelihood of US or Israeli military action against Iranian nuclear sites would increase significantly, according to the report.
Iran has yet to publicly respond to the letter. The letter was sent amid growing tensions over Iran's nuclear program and the potential for escalating military confrontation that has also recently involved Houthis.
