Paul Atkins, known for his pro-cryptocurrency stance, has been chosen by United States President-elect Donald Trump to lead the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Unchained Crypto reported on Tuesday, citing three people familiar with the matter.

Atkins previously held the position of SEC commissioner during President George W. Bush's administration. He is highly regarded within conservative legal circles as well as among mainstream Republicans. Atkins is anticipated to succeed the current Chair, Gary Gensler, who recently announced his intention to step down on January 20, coinciding with Trump's inauguration.

For Atkins to officially assume the role, Senate confirmation is required. However, the media noted that Trump might opt for a recess appointment if the Senate is not in session at the time.
