Mitch McConnell (pictured), Senate majority leader, told lawmakers on Thursday that United States President Donald Trump is "prepared to sign" the bipartisan legislation for border security funding, but that he would also declare a national emergency at the same time.
The upper chamber of Congress is preparing to vote on the proposed bills after drafting the package to prevent another government shutdown. The partial one that lasted until January 25 was the longest in history. Trump demanded $5.7 billion for a wall at the border with Mexico, but the Republican and Democratic negotiators approved only $1.38 billion for the purpose, compared to $1.6 billion from last year.
The president has hinted on several occasions that he could turn to executive powers to finance the physical barrier. He has the option to combine the two approaches. McConnell asserted he supports Trump's decision to issue the declaration.
