United States President Donald Trump said on Thursday that a Nippon Steel deal could be a part of the tariff negotiations with Japan, although he is doubtful about it.

"I think we're going to view it separately. We want US Steel to remain in the hands of the United States and the people of the United States. I have great respect for Japan, but we don't want a foreign country buying US Steel," Trump said, calling US Steel "one of the most powerful companies in the world" and vowing to make it "strong and powerful" again.

"If Nippon wants to come in, and I hear they're working on it very hard. I have great respect for Nippon Steel, and I know a lot about it. They can invest and they can do lots of things, partnerships, but we want US Steel to remain in this country," the US president added.
