General Motors must recall 5.9 million vehicles from the American market, after the rejection of the company's petition to avoid the callback by a United States safety agency on Monday.
The problem is related to the installed Takata airbag inflators. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that "prolonged exposure to heat and humidity can degrade the chemical propellant used in the airbag inflators," which might result in the entrance of sharp metal fragments through the airbags and put the passengers in danger.
NHTSA urges vehicle owners to check if their cars are on the list of the producers who have been informed to recall their problematic vehicles (Toyota, BMW, Audi, Honda, Mitsubishi, and Isuzu Oasis), and, if so, to take all necessary steps and finalize the recall procedure.
