West Mercia Police announced on Wednesday it shot down a 39-year-old man in Redditch, Worcestershire, on Christmas Eve.
The department told the media its officers responded to an emergency call about a man with a knife at around 2:00 pm local time on Tuesday. After "several hours" of trying to calm the situation down, the police shot the suspect at about 7:40 pm. He was pronounced dead at around 8:00 pm.
"We do not underestimate the shock and concern this may cause the local community and I want to reassure residents that we are following all appropriate procedures, this included making an immediate referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), as is mandatory and right," Assistant Chief Constable Grant Wills explained. "We will support their investigation, which will include providing all information we hold, including body-worn camera footage."
