The United Nations announced on Monday it will withdraw about one-third of its international personnel from the Gaza Strip following a deadly explosion at a UN compound last week.
The March 19 strike killed one staff member and injured five others. UN officials say evidence points to an Israeli tank being responsible. For its part, Israel has denied involvement in the explosion, and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have not commented.
UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the decision to reduce staff was "difficult" but necessary for safety. "Humanitarian needs are soaring," he added, emphasizing the UN is not abandoning Gaza.
