United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged Israel to reverse its directive aimed at expelling the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) from Jerusalem, AFP reported on Tuesday.
"I regret this decision and request that the Government of Israel retract it," Guterres said in a letter. He emphasized the "irreplaceable nature" of UNRWA and dismissed Israel's assertions of sovereignty over East Jerusalem, where the agency holds an office.
Earlier today, Israel's Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, declared that UNRWA would be prohibited from functioning in what Israel considers its sovereign area within 48 hours and stated that the agency must vacate its locations in Jerusalem due to its alleged failure to prevent terrorist infiltration into its ranks.
