Louisa Vinton, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Turkey Resident Representative, told reporters on Tuesday via video link that in Turkey alone, the damages from the devastating earthquake are estimated to have exceeded $100 billion.
She further explained that recovery costs are yet to be added to that. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan previously stated that the country aims to rebuild new homes demolished in the natural disaster within the period of one year.
The 7.8-magnitude quake, which struck Turkey and Syria in early February, claimed over 50,000 lives. UN officials labeled the catastrophe as one of the worst events in 100 years in that region.
