The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) expressed on Monday deep concern over escalating violence in southern Lebanon, with attacks on civilians potentially constituting "war crimes."
Amid the most recent Israeli bombardment and attacks on Hezbollah members with massive explosions of communication devices, UNIFIL's Head of Mission, Aroldo Lazaro, has been actively engaging with both Israeli and Lebanese officials, stressing the urgent need for de-escalation, the UNIFIL stated. The mission urged for a renewed commitment to UN Security Council Resolution 1701, calling for diplomacy to prevent further devastation and stabilize the region.
Reports from Lebanese authorities indicated that at least 274 civilians died and 1,024 were injured in an Israeli strike on Lebanon.
