The United States House of Representatives adjourned without electing a speaker for the third consecutive day after Republican Kevin McCarthy failed to garner enough votes in the 11th ballot. He currently needs 218 ballots to be elected, but he only managed 200 in the latest round. Democrat Hakeem Jeffries had 212, as all lawmakers from his party voted for him, with other candidates sharing the remaining 21 votes.
The House will not be able to swear in new members, adopt internal rules, run committees or perform legislative duties until a speaker is chosen. McCarthy stated that "we’ve got some progress going on" regarding negotiations with other Republican lawmakers, but added that he is not "putting any timeline on it."
