United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) informed Congress it sent military personnel to the US-Mexico border to paint barriers in order to "improve the aesthetic appearance."
"DHS informed Congress today that troops are going to spend the next month painting the border wall & 'the primary purpose is to improve the aesthetic appearance.' A disgraceful misuse of taxpayer $$. Our military has more important work to do than making Trump’s wall beautiful," Senator Dick Durbin tweeted.
CBS News reported that Congress was notified through email which stated that in addition to the aesthetic appearance of the wall "there may be an operational benefit based on our experience with painted barrier in Nogales, Arizona." DHS reportedly said that it will be more difficult for migrants to camouflage and climb painted barriers. Some 4,000 troops are currently stationed at the border where they are securing the area, Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said earlier.
