US expresses doubts over Astana deal on Syria

The United States Department of State said in a statement on Thursday that Washington supports "any effort that can genuinely de-escalate the violence in Syria, ensure unhindered humanitarian access, focus energies on the defeat of ISIS and other terrorists, and create the conditions for a credible political resolution of the conflict."

The US said it "appreciates" the work of Russia and Turkey that is aimed at stopping violence in Syria. However, the press release noted that the State Department has serious doubts over Iran as a guarantor of the Astana peace talks. The US noted, "Iran’s activities in Syria have only contributed to the violence, not stopped it, and Iran’s unquestioning support for the Assad regime has perpetuated the misery of ordinary Syrians."

The statement stressed that it expects all parties, including the opposition, to adhere to the agreement, and pointed out that the US expects Russia to ensure regime compliance.
