US govt shutdown averted as Senate passes funding

The United States Senate passed a one-week stopgap bill to avoid a government shutdown as lawmakers continue to debate larger funding legislation. The bill was adopted by the House of Representatives yesterday.

The stopgap was approved in a 71-19 vote, extending funding until December 23. The measure will give senators some more time to agree on the text of an omnibus bill worth around $1.7 billion. The text could be published early next week, with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer warning lawmakers could work on the specifics until Christmas.
