United States Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves assured Yonhap Agency on Thursday of his country's commitment to supporting South Korean chipmakers. With just one month remaining before the expiration of a one-year waiver, he assured that every effort would be made to enable these companies to carry on their operations in China or any other country.
"We understand the concerns that companies have and we'll do everything that we can to make sure that companies can continue to conduct their business," the official said.
In October 2018, the US imposed laws that prevented the sending of state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China in order to obstruct its technological development. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix got a one-year waiver due to worries about disturbances in their enterprises in China since they depend on US hardware for fabrication.
