US won't abandon Taiwan - Pelosi

EPA-EFE/CENTRAL NEWS AGENCY

United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said her visit to Taiwan is the proof the US will not abandon its commitment to the island.

"Today, our delegation came to Taiwan to make it unequivocally clear we will not abandon our commitment to Taiwan and we are proud of our enduring friendship," she stated. "Now more than ever, America's solidarity with Taiwan is crucial and that is the message we are bringing here today."

Pelosi made the comments after meeting with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in Taipei. Her visit to the disputed island drew sharp criticism from China and prompted Beijing to announce live-fire military drills encircling Taiwan over the next several days.
