Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar told the Financial Times that his country is not planning to join NATO.

In an interview published on Thursday, Varadkar insisted that Dublin is "never going to be a significant military power" and is, therefore "never going to be a huge asset to NATO, if we ever join it."

The Taoiseach stressed however that Ireland needs to "do more" to address a potential naval threat from Russia. Varadkar stated Dublin is working with its partners from the European Union, Union Kingdom and the United States to "make sure that [cables and pipelines] are more secure and harder to sabotage" and ensure it could respond to a "threat if it did emerge."
