Venezuela says Trump's tariff threat on oil buyers 'illegal'

Venezuela said that United States President Donald Trump's threat to impose a 25% tariff on countries that purchase oil and gas from them is an "arbitrary, illegal and desperate measure."

"Venezuela firmly and categorically rejects the new aggression announced by the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, who intends to impose a secondary tariff of 25% on any country that trades with Venezuela in oil and gas," Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil said on Telegram. "They have not been able to, and will not be able to, stop us. The policy of maximum pressure has failed in Venezuela and around the world," the statement published by the minister reads.

The measure, Gil said, "far from affecting our determination, confirms the resounding failure of all the sanctions imposed against our country."
