Volkswagen to recall 114,000 cars in the US over airbag issues

EPA-EFE/MARTIN DIVISEK

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Thursday that Volkswagen will recall 114,000 vehicles due to issues with the airbag modules.

According to the auto regulator, "The driver's side frontal airbag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high-temperature cycling."

The automaker, for its part, said it was not aware of any incidents affecting drivers. However, dealers are willing to replace the driver's side front airbag part free of charge.
