The administration of United States President Joe Biden has reached out to SpaceX founder Elon Musk about enabling the company's Starlink satellite internet service in Iran, CNN reported on Friday citing sources familiar with the matter.
The move comes after the Iranian government restricted internet in parts of the country amid protests that erupted over the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman who died in police custody after being arrested for "improperly" wearing the hijab.
Earlier this year, Musk's SpaceX enabled Starlink in Ukraine to provide the country with secure internet access amid its war with Russia. However, Musk recently claimed the company is losing $20 million a month by providing Ukraine with Starlink and complained about not receiving any funds from Pentagon. Still, he insisted the company will "keep doing it."
