United States National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby confirmed on Wednesday that the US is working to finalize a deal with Iran on a prisoner swap and the unfreezing of Iranian assets in South Korea.

Kirby told White House reporters that the funds will be available for "humanitarian" purposes only. The funds will be moved to Qatar and monitored closely by the US, which will be able to freeze the assets again if Iran misuses the money, according to Kirby.

The US did not pay a "ransom" and Iran will not get sanctions relief, he also clarified.
