Congress reportedly told about US-Iran prisoner swap

EPA/STRINGER

The Biden government informed United States Congress about a prisoner swap deal with Iran, The Associated Press reported on Monday, citing the alleged notification document.

Five American nationals held in Iran and five Iranian citizens detained in the US will be exchanged as soon as next week under the deal, which will also include the unfreezing of $6 billion of Iranian funds in South Korea. The money, intended for humanitarian purposes in Iran, will be transferred to Qatar and will not be subject to sanctions against Tehran, according to the report.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reportedly approved a waiver for international banks to move the funds to Qatar without them being sanctioned by Washington.
