The White House has commenced a process of searching for a new United States defense secretary, NPR reported on Monday, citing a US official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The report comes after the White House underlined that US President Donald Trump "stands behind" current Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has been tangled up in a controversy after reports claimed that he discussed the country's military plans in the Signal chatroom.
