The United States expressed concern over South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s brief imposition of martial law, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding democracy.
"South Korea's democracy is robust and resilient, and we're going to continue to speak out publicly and engage privately with South Korean counterparts to reinforce the importance of that continuing," US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said while speaking at the Center for Strategic and International Studies on Wednesday.
Sullivan acknowledged Washington was not informed of the declaration beforehand, learning about it through media reports. He commended South Korea’s National Assembly for acting constitutionally to cancel the measure and stressed the importance of democratic institutions functioning properly in the Asian country.
