White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt insisted on Monday that "we've never been closer to a peace deal" between Russia and Ukraine "than we are at this moment."

Speaking at a press conference about United States President Donald Trump's scheduled telephone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Leavitt remarked that "I won't get ahead of these negotiations, but I can say we're on the tenth-yard line of peace."

Leavitt noted that Trump is "determined to get" the deal "done" but will not shy away from imposing additional sanctions on Russia if one is not reached soon.
