EPA-EFE/SHAWN THEW

The Washington Post said on Monday that its Chief Executive Fred Ryan has stepped down after leading the newspaper for the past nine years. The 68-year-old executive will continue to work as publisher until August while being succeeded by Patty Stonesifer, who will serve as interim CEO.

"I feel a strong sense of urgency in my next steps to address the decline in civility and respectful dialogue in our political process. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead the new Center on Public Civility, which will play an important role in support of our democracy," Ryan said.

Ryan will depart to helm the newly established Center on Public Civility at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. His exit comes amid a challenging period for the industry, characterized by layoffs and closures of news outlets. Commenting on the situation, Ryan clarified that his departure is unrelated to these issues.
