Google's self-driving subsidiary Waymo LLC and Hyundai Motor Company announced on Friday that they entered a multi-year partnership on autonomous driving technology.
The companies said the first phase of the deal will include integrating Waymo's self-driving technology called Waymo Driver into the South Korean carmaker's all-electric IONIQ 5 SUV, which will be added to the fleet of the Waymo One autonomous ride-hailing service in the future. The vehicles made for the fleet will be manufactured at Hyndai's new plant in Georgia, with initial on-road testing of the cars set to start late next year.
"We are thrilled to partner with Hyundai as we further our mission to be the world's most trusted driver," Waymo CEO Tekedra Mawakana stated. "Hyundai's focus on sustainability and strong electric vehicle roadmap makes them a great partner for us as we bring our fully autonomous service to more riders in more places," she added.
