X Corp., the parent company of social network X, formerly known as Twitter, threatened to sue the Center for Countering Digital Hate, the New York Times reported on Monday. In the letter sent to the nonprofit, X accuses it of making a "series of troubling and baseless claims that appear calculated to harm Twitter generally, and its digital advertising business specifically."
X cited papers published by the Center for Countering Digital Hate in June, which said the center reported 100 Twitter Blue accounts for "tweeting hate" and that the social media company took no action on 99 of them. X rejected the claim and accused the nonprofit of being sponsored by its competitors or foreign governments "in support of an ulterior agenda," according to the NYT report. Center for Countering Digital Hate CEO Imran Ahmed said X owner Elon Musk's actions "represent a brazen attempt to silence honest criticism and independent research" as he seeks to improve his relations with advertisers.
