Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Monday that his country "firmly opposes" hegemony, unilateralism, protectionism and power politics.

Speaking at a commemorative meeting marking the 50th anniversary of the restoration of China's seat in the United Nations, Xi insisted Beijing has always worked on defending international fairness and is supporting developing countries' fight for sovereignty and security.

Last week, the Chinese Commerce Ministry urged the United States to work with Beijing on implementing the phase one trade deal the two countries signed and added it would welcome Washington's potential removal on import tariffs on Chinese goods.
