Yandex co-founder and former CEO Arkady Volozh (pictured right) formally asked the European Union to lift the sanctions imposed against him in response to Moscow's attack on Ukraine, the Financial Times reported on Sunday citing people familiar with the matter.

Volozh's lawyers submitted the request after the billionaire slammed Moscow for pursuing the war in Ukraine. Earlier this month, Volozh, who lives in Israel, called the invasion "barbaric" and claimed he is "categorically against it."

In 2022, Volozh stepped down from the role of CEO of Yandex and left the company after the EU introduced sanctions against him.
