Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Rete4 TV channel that only "crazy" people "devoid of morality" can suggest Russia has the intention to launch an attack against Ukraine, focusing her criticism on statements from the White House and the Downing Street.
She stressed that Moscow was blamed solely for moving troops across its own territory and accused the United States of inventing scenarios surrounding Ukraine possibly to get Germany to quit using NordStream 2 pipeline which transports Russian gas to Western Europe.
The US had previously voiced concerns over Russian troop build-ups near the border with Ukraine and called for a de-escalation of tensions, as President Joe Biden admitted he has no intention of deploying offensive weapons in case Moscow made a move.
