Luis Almagro, secretary-general of the Organization of American States (OAS), congratulated on Wednesday Juan Guaido, who took the oath as interim president of Venezuela. "Has all our recognition to drive the return of the country to democracy," the official said.
The Uruguayan stated last week, causing an uproar in diplomatic circles of member countries, that the opposition lawmaker should be given a one-year term as the temporary head of state. Guaido is the president of the National Assembly of Venezuela. The administration of President Nicolas Maduro disputes its authority as it has its own parliament, the Constituent National Assembly.
Almagro's announcement was synchronized with that of United States President Donald Trump.
