Trump recognizes Guaido as acting president of Venezuela

United States President Donald Trump recognized Venezuela's opposition leader and president of the National Assembly Juan Guaido as acting president of the country on Wednesday. Guaido declared himself as interim president moments earlier as he spoke to supporters in Caracas.

"Today, I am officially recognizing the President of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Juan Guaido, as the Interim President of Venezuela," Trump said in a statement. He added he would use "the full weight of United States economic and diplomatic power to press for the restoration of Venezuelan democracy."

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of supporters and opponents of President Nicolas Maduro gathered on the streets of the Venezuela capital days after a mutiny within the country's Bolivarian National Guard.
