Amazon employees at the Staten Island warehouse called JFK8 voted to join the Amazon Labor Union (ALU) on Friday, a worker-led movement to secure better working conditions at Amazon. Today's decision marks the first time workers at a US Amazon facility voted in favor of unionizing.
The ALU demands the company increases salaries, and allow its employees to get more paid breaks and vacation.
The Union was created by former JFK8-manager Christian Smalls who was fired in 2020 because he "violated social distancing rules." Later on, Smalls organized rallies disapproving of Amazon’s labor practices and demanding that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos increase the wages.
