French Prime Minister Michel Barnier triggered Article 49.3 of the French constitution on Monday to pass the 2025 budget without a vote in the parliament. "I believe that we have now reached a moment of truth that places everyone in front of their responsibilities," he told lawmakers, claiming that the "nation's future" is more important than "individual interests."
Several opposition parties vowed to introduce motions of no confidence, with far-right National Rally (RN) promising to vote together with leftwing parties. RN leader Jordan Bardella said there is "no way out" for Barnier's minority government, which has been in place since September.
