United States President Joe Biden issued a proclamation announcing the passing of former United States President James Carter.
"President Carter was a man of character, courage, and compassion, whose lifetime of service defined him as one of the most influential statesmen in our history," wrote Biden, adding that Carter embodied "the very best of America." He went on to list the former president's many accomplishments including the creation of the modern Departments of Energy and Education.
Biden ordered that the flag of the US fly at half mast for a period of thirty days from the day of Carter's death. He also proclaimed January 9, 2025, to be the National Day of Mourning.
