Cavusoglu: Bin Salman asked to meet Erdogan

Turkey's Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlut Cavusoglu told Sueddeutsche Zeitung that there is no reason why President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wouldn't sit down with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (pictured). King Salman's son, widely known as MBS, asked in a phone call for a meeting which could be organized at this week's summit of the Group of Twenty (G20) in Argentina, he added in an interview published on Tuesday.

The top diplomat expressed hope more clarity would result from the encounter, following the murder of Saudi activist Jamal Khashoggi in the monarchy's consulate in Istanbul, but he added he is "not sure." Asked about who gave the order, Cavusoglu asserted that there is no evidence and repeated his government demands to find out where the body is and who assisted the assassins in Turkey.

Turning to relations with the European Union, he stressed the persistence in pursuit of membership and warned the administration in Brussels needs to tell Erdogan's government if it doesn't want to allow it.
