A Chinese court sentenced on Wednesday Canadian national Michael Spavor to 11 years in prison over "espionage and illegally providing state secrets."
Spavor and fellow Canadian Michael Kovrig were charged with spying in June 2020 after they had been arrested in 2018. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described today's verdict as "absolutely unacceptable and unjust," pointing out "a lack of transparency in the legal process, and a trial that did not satisfy even the minimum standards required by international law."
Western officials see Spavor's, Kovrig's and other Canadians' legal cases in China as linked to the arrest and potential extradition of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou from Canada to the United States.
