China announced on Tuesday that it would roll out import tariffs for a range of goods from the United States, ignoring the threat by United States President Donald Trump he would raise the rates for the latest round of protectionist measures in case of retaliation. The government in Beijing said it is targeting merchandise worth $60 billion per year with 5% to 10%.
Furthermore, China repeated it would respond "accordingly" to any other increase in tariffs and accused the other side of unilateralism. It called on the US government to ease tensions and return to dialogue and mutual respect.
The list contains 5,207 items unchanged from the original preliminary document but it is not complete, officials acknowledged. However, liquefied natural gas (LNG) will be levied with 10% instead of the proposed 25%. The document showed goods initially planned to be burdened with 20% and 10% rates would get 10% and 5%, respectively. The measures are scheduled to come into force on September 24, the same as in the US.
