The Chinese consulate general in Los Angeles on Tuesday issued a warning against a potential meeting between Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen and United States House speaker Kevin McCarthy, AFP reported.
A spokesman for the consulate general reportedly said Beijing's main objection to the meeting is that it would be in violation of the "One-China principle" which recognizes China as the only legitimate government of both the Chinese mainland and Taiwan. The spokesman also argued that the meeting would not be in the interests of China or the United States.
The comments were made after McCarthy confirmed his plan to meet with Tsai on Wednesday on her return trip from Central America.
