The National Association of Secretaries of State and the National Association of State Election Directors sent a letter to the United States Postal Service (USPS) Chief Executive Officer, Louis DeJoy, on Wednesday, warning of significant issues with the mail system that could impact the upcoming presidential election in November, AP reported.
Election officials from across the country reported persistent problems, including delays in receiving mailed ballots and returned mail marked undeliverable, despite correct addresses.
The letter highlighted that previous attempts to address these problems with the USPS had been unsuccessful and described the issues as widespread rather than isolated incidents. “We implore you to take immediate and tangible corrective action to address the ongoing performance issues with USPS election mail service … Failure to do so will risk limiting voter participation and trust in the election process,” the officials urged DeJoy.
