EU agrees on universal USB-C charger for devices

The European Parliament's Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection stated on Tuesday that it had reached an agreement on the previously proposed legislation requiring all electronic devices to charge using the universal USB-C connector regardless of their manufacturer.

The decision applies to Apple's products, as well as other electronic gadgets like tablets, digital cameras, headphones, handheld videogame consoles, and e-readers. Aside from the common charging port, the EU agreed to coordinate fast-charging standards, allowing users to charge their devices at the same rate with any compatible charger.

The European Union intends to implement changes by the autumn of 2024 while focusing on making its products more sustainable by reducing electronic waste, as disposed and unused chargers account for approximately 11,000 tonnes of e-waste annually.
