The European Commission said on Monday that it reached an agreement with the United Kingdom on future steps concerning the European Union's access to British IT systems.

EC Vice President Maros Sefcovic held talks with UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and UK Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris in London earlier in the day and the three officials "noted this work was a critical prerequisite to building trust and providing assurance, and provided a new basis for EU-UK discussions," according to Brussels.

The representatives of the two sides will meet again on January 16 and "EU and UK technical teams will work rapidly to scope the potential for solutions in different areas on the basis of this renewed understanding," the statement by the commission specified.
